Teacher Cadets
Nov. 13-17, 2006

Monday Nov. 13,
Today Teacher Cadets was a blast. As a prelude to our preschool observations, we got to have a play day. The play day consisted of the typical centers one would find in a preschool classroom. Each of the centers promoted certain types of play. The random object corner promoted practice play while the store/restaurant area promoted symbolic play. These centers helped us get an idea of what kind of learning occurs through play. I, personally, had to work on the concept of patience. I was thoroughly disappointed when I didn’t have enough time to finger paint.

Tuesday Nov. 14,
Today we went over what all we were to look for in our preschool observations. We brainstormed as to what kinds of play we would see as well as whether or not the play would be interpersonal. Ms. Turner gave out the blue observation sheets and told us which teachers we were to visit. She also gave us a couple of extra questions to take into consideration and/or ask the Kindergarten teachers. These questions focused on proper environment and play.

Wednesday Nov. 15
Today was the first day of observations. Our class went to several local elementary schools. Jon and I went to Greenbrier Elementary; I was very amused by the name tag machine, which Jon had to show me how to work. Upon our arrival we found that the Kindergarten teachers all had a conference to go to that day. Instead of working with the regular teachers we observed substitute teachers. I ended up observing a substitute who I’ve had before. She was very good with the kids and worked with them on their level (crouching down so that she was eye to eye with the children). I got to help the children make “inchworm rulers.”

Thursday Nov. 16
I went back to Greenbrier Elementary, today to observe Mrs. Lavigne’s class again. Since she was not there the previous day, I wanted to see how she interacted with the children as opposed to the substitute. She also worked well with the children and kept them all working with the minimal amount of fuss. I’m not sure as to how I like the structured lessons of the Kindergarten class but then I’ve only seen the first hour of their day. Today I got to work with the kids individually as they wrote about a field trip. For the most part, the students were already very proficient at transcribing some printed word. Unfortunately, today was the last day of K-5 observations, but I did get to meet some really great kids.

Friday Nov. 17
Today we had the period to work on our “Design a Preschool Project.” Anthony, Jatana, and I are working together on an Arts Preschool. We used the time to figure out our staff as well as our cost per student. Preschool sure is expensive! We plan to offer several different “related arts” at our school; Drama, Music, Dance, Visual Arts, and Computer Classes. All of these will be taught on a preschool level. Also, today, Kate presented her log presentation, and there was much rejoicing (Monty Python).
