Abbey’s First Week of Field Experience:

Best Experience:
The best experience I had this week in Ms. Quinn’s class was making pancakes with the students on Friday. They made pancakes to celebrate their book for this week was If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Also since Friday was national pig day everyone wore pink as another way to celebrate the book. I had a lot of fun Friday! It was the first time I really got to work with all the students. I got a chance to talk to all of them while they were making and eating their pancakes.

Worst Experience:
I really did not have any bad experiences this week. The worst thing I can think of was trying to keep students attention while tutoring them in the classroom or in the hallway. Through tutoring them in the classroom and in the hallway I learned it was better to be alone with the students in a quite place, like the library. While we were around other people some of the students I worked with had trouble focusing on their work. After a while that got a little frustrating. I can totally understand why the students got distracted though because at their age I would have too.

Kelsie Coker's First Week of Field Experience:
My best experience day was probably on Wedenesday, March 11, 2009 because I got to read and enteract more with the kindergarten class and in Sissel's class I got to do more than sit there and observe.
March 11, 2009 Fourth day of field experience was great! I got to help Mrs. Dyar hang up the kids work of their lions and lambs. Mrs. Dyar began reading them a book before announcements came on. After announcements, she did the calendar and rymthing words with the kids. She then asked me if I wanted to finish reading the book she started earlier this morning with the kids. Of course I jumped on the opportunity. I finished reading the book and Mrs. Dyar made the kids get around the carpet to work on the alphabet. In Coach Sissel's class I began grading papers while he went over the bell work and homework with the students. He gave them a class assignment due at the end of the period and homework so they would be prepared for the quiz tomorrow.

I haven't really had a worst experience, but I guess the worst thing so far would be Moday, March 9, 2009 because for both classes I was sitting there doing nothing and it was drving me crazy, but that's part of it
March 9,2009

My second day of field experience was a little boring. Mrs. Dyar's class basically did the calendar work, began working on the letter J, and did a worksheet for the letter J. Coach Sissel's class began their bell work and then he began a new unit. He gave them a vocabulary list where they would have to write the word, its definition, and an example to be turned in by March 19. He then began teaching them about monomials.

Ashley,
Sounds like you had a pretty busy week!! I think it would be really interesting to be in a multiage class. I'm sure you will learn a lot from that type of classroom setting! Enjoy your second week of field experience!

The good thing about your two classes is that they are close together in age. I think you will learn a lot about both classes and it will help you to determine which grade level you would like it work with like one better than the other. Have a great second week!!

Best Experience:

The best experience I had was actually last Friday. I spent the whole day with Mrs. Ward and the student teacher, Ms. Crisp. We talked during both planning periods. It was so fun to get to know them both. I am really glad to be back in a U.S. History class! :-)

Worst Experience:

I haven't had a bad experience yet. It has been a blast so far!

Funniest Experience:

Mrs. Ward had a picture of the Hoover Dam with a caption telling the students what it was. The caption actually read "Hoover Damn". The students pointed it out, and we all had a good laugh!

My best experience for the first week was probably just grading the "Foldables" the class did on WWII. Sounds pretty boring mostly what I have done so far is watch and learn how she handles her class. Grading this assignment helped me to learn how to judge material students hand in. There was no criteria on the grading except that the student have all 12 topics and they were accurately defined.

I haven't really had a worst experience yet. Like I said above, most of what I have done is observing. I haven't really interacted with the students yet. I start bell ringers and attendance this coming week though.

I'm glad that no one seems to have had a bad experience yet! I hope it stays that way! Good luck next week everyone!

Hannah's First Week of Field Experience:

I didn't really have a absolute best and worst experience but some days were better than others.

The worst part about this week was that I didn't really have much that I could do for my teacher. I got to learn the kids' names and watch them work, but other than that it was a pretty boring week.

The best part of the week was the few times I got to help students on their work. It was great when the kids finally got comfortable enough to ask me for help. Being able to finally help the kids was the best part of my week.

Best Experience:
One of the girls that I taught in dance is in my class! She ran up to me on the first day and started screaming my name! She was so excited and I am glad I get to work with her again!

Worst Experience:
I had to sort these beans that were painted gold. Some of them were only painted on one side so I had to put them in a box and the ones that were all done in a bag. There were so many and it was very tedious!

Abbey, making pancakes sounds so fun!! I am sad because I don't get to do any activities with the kids because they only do circle time when I am there!

Ashley- Sorry if I didn't make my best and worst experiences clear at first! The best thing for me so far is just getting to know the students and seeing how they are interacting with their environment and other students around them. The worst is that they do get a bit noisy and can easily get off track. Other than that it was a good first week!

Abbey- Sounds like you have had an awesome first week as well! I think that the pancake idea as well as wearing pink is a great way to get the students involved in what they have been learning through the week!

Abbey, you didn't save us pancakes? D= Oh well, we all ate too much on Friday anyway.

It looks like all of you had an interesting week.

Mine wasn't all that eventful since I didn't want to disturb the students during PASS testing =D

The best: Probably Thursday when I actually started to help out a bit. I tried to help a girl named Kimberly in home room with her application to Greer Middle College. We seem to have the same problem with finding the right words ^_^;; Although I got held back because I was skimming Anne Frank to see if I could help some students later =X

the worst: Ugh, passing out the vocabulary test on Friday. I was so embarrassed because I was going so slow! The printer had messed up somehow and every other paper was blank T_T

Kristen! The Hoover Dam story was pretty hilarious. I'm glad you had a good full day of experience. I'm sure you were completely in your element. :)

PS To all Cadets:
I have a feeling I didn't do this correctly so I think my experience blog is like a headliner on the home page...sorry about that :)

Kimberly's first week of Field Experience

This week I got to start working with a little hispanic girl. She cannot read or write English, but she can understand and speak it very well. I came to found that she was a very smart girl and it's sad that she is so far behind the rest of her class. We have caught up on a lot of her work already. When i came in after the first day I worked with her, Mrs. Ellis told me how excited she was that she was getting caught up on her work. I'm so excited that I get to continue working with her because I didn't realize it was so easy to make a difference in a little girl's life!
The worst experience I had this week was having to do a lot of 'grunt work.' I had to do this mainly because it was my first week in there and I needed to get use to the atmosphere before I started interacting with the students.

This week was a very fun and exciting week at Mauldin Middle. My best experience would probably have to be talking to the kids. They were very excited that I was there and they were asking me a lot of questions. I also enjoyed watching the student-teacher interactions because the students in this particular class seem very insightful. My worst experience would probably have to be the two days of testing that we did! They took the PASS test, which was like PACT, and all I did the entire time was sit and watch. Overall, it was a very good week and I am excited to be working with them more.

This week was very good and very fun. My best experience is when i connected with Emma and drew pictures with her and showed her how to write my name and how to draw a bee :) My worst experience was the day that there was no kids there for the entire time i was there! They showed up around 9:30! So i just sat there pretty much. But i am very excited for the next few months working with this class. :)

Hey Guys!!
My first week went very well! I've started learning the routine of the classroom and the names of the students. As an observer, I thoroughly enjoyed watching "Deskercize" every morning. But as a working Teacher Cadet, my favorite experience thus far was leading the song and dance at carpet time. I got to sing the "Disco ABC's". They eventually stopped dancing just to stare at my terrible dance moves. :p My worst experience was during my tutor time with a particular student. This student has been under extensive observation and has a lot of difficulty focusing. I was asked to help him with his morning work. I found that during my time, I couldn't reach him mentally. No matter how many different approaches I tried to teach him with, he still didn't seem to understand. I took this experience as a lesson learned. Perisistence is key with students such as this one and it it takes perserverance through situations like that to figure it out. Overall, wonderful week!!

Caroline, I would definitely like to see you singing the Disco ABC's hahaha. Good job. Im glad your having fun! :)

Best Experience: This week i really enjoyed helping out the students with their "Disease Projects". This project was right up my alley, seeing as I want to be a doctor! I was surprised at how much I remembered about most of the diseases the kids were assigned.

Worst Experience: I didn't really have a bad experience this week, although I remembered how hateful middle schoolers can be. This weeek wasn't too exciting though, because my teacher was REALLY sticking to the handouts and she did not want me to do much more than observe, and occasionally help the students with their projects.

Haha Mackenzie and Rachel, I definitely got kicked out the first day of PASS testing, by some teacher. I tried to go in and observe that day, but the teacher made me leave :( so I went and helped out in guidance.

Brittany's First Week
My best experience was getting to grade tests, and see how the students understood the new lesson. My worst experience was getting lost. The whole first week. I think i know my way around a little better now though :)

Caroline,
Your day sounds so fun! Especially the morning warm up!!! Im sorry to hear about your students difficulty focusing. Youre right, persistence is the key...dont give up!

Best Experience:
The best experience I had this week in Mrs. Wrights class was going to the Roper Mountain Science Center with the students. I was just as excited as the class, as Friday was my first time going to the science center. My favorite part of that day was spending time with the students, and watching them explode with excitment as they learned, questioned, and even fed animals.

Worst Experience:
My field experience has been great so far! I can't think of a worst moment, but I had trouble with the students behaving at the Science Center. Obviously Mrs. Wright can't be everywhere at once, and the select few thought they could cause trouble and act out, even when I asked them not to. Once the students were addressed one on one, the rest of the day was great!

Best Experience:
This week I really just sat back and watched my teacher to get the feel for their routine. The students though are so wonderful and great to see their willingness to learn. They are so enthusiastic about everything.

Worst Experience:
Tryin to teach the students how to pronounce my last name :-) I never thought my name was that hard but I just stuck to Miss Wood. It was a lot easier for the students! :-)
