September 10-14

Today was Monday, and I never like them just because you have to go back to school. Also everyone seems to have, “the case of the Mondays.” Anyways we began class by talking about the field trip we were supposed to have on the 21st. However, due to map testing we are no longer going that day. After being distraught about this heart-wrenching news Cassie gave her lovely presentation. Then we moved on to the reflections we wrote over the weekend. We discussed our similarities and differences; Ms. Kasie Granner was especially good at pointing these out. Next, we talked about what statement we wanted to use as our class quote. After a long, heated debate we chose, “Different personalities changing the world, one student at a time.” I like the quote; I think its sounds pretty spiffy. Anyways we discussed the Georgia and South Carolina game but who cares Clemson is the best. Finally we got to our main objective, discussing pot. Mrs. Turner tells us a story that I didn’t quite get it, but I did hear her say, “I am the pot man.” We also read, “A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures.” We talked about teachers’ negative and positive emotions towards kids. Kasie mentioned Mr. Mitchell banging the board. I realized Mrs. Turner’s excitement of the day was saying that pots are filled with poop.

Today we began class by picking up Winthrop applications if we were interested. Next, we began to create our pots. Honestly, I was very concerned about which kind of pot I would create, because I don’t know of any pot besides cooking pots. So instead of creating an actual pot, I created a mailbox. It seemed like a lot of people made coffee cups, which is cool, but I really wanted someone to make a coffee pot. However, I would still drink out of both Angela’s and Meredith’s cups of coffee. We hung our pots on the wall after the debate between Mrs. Turner and Daniel. For homework we had to read a self esteem article. We were to highlight things we agree and disagree with. The article was about different kind of self esteems. It also stressed the importance of self esteem’s involvement in education.

Class was really interesting today. First, Mrs. Turner returned our receipts of our payments in order to receive college credit through Anderson University. Then Mrs. Turner pointed to the pots we made, and she asked everyone their reason behind making theirs. Next, we began discussing our homework. Kasie, Angela, and I led the discussion by reading what people wrote on their sticky notes. Basically we talked about how self esteem influences students’ academic performance. However, we agreed that really self esteem isn’t just solely based on how well you do in school; there are many other factors to be considered. We didn’t quite finish our discussion because class ended.

Today class was shortened due to the annual senior class picture. Mrs. Turner made announcements about upcoming deadlines. We talked about our autobiographies. Tomorrow is the deadline for tuition money. She mentioned several opportunities for service hours. She also talked about how next week we would start on our puppet shows.

Thank God it’s Friday! So class was exciting today. We had story time. It reminded me of my fond childhood memories of sitting in the library watching the librarian turn and lick the pages. It was great! Dominique read to us, “The Ugly Duckling,” it was extremely emotional and a tear-jerker. I always thought the duck was kind of cute; I’m glad he turned into a swan. My favorite part was when he saw his reflection in the water because it reminded me of that song, “Reflection.” Afterwards, Mrs. Turner read, “D.W. Rides Again.” This book was a lot shorter; I’m thinking it was for four year olds. But hey, we are all kids at heart. Basically this book showed that positive reinforcement is needed for kids to strive to reach their goals, as D.W. demonstrated when she learned how to ride her bike. After story time was over, Mrs. Turner discussed our next project, which is to create our own puppet show. I’ve never done one of these. I enjoyed hearing about last year’s, “Nut Story.” We divided into groups of three or four. I’m pretty pumped about my group. The rest of class we were to decide what it was that we wanted to present.
