Kimberly Kelly comes to visit!

Ms. Kimberly Kelly, a guidance counselor from Mauldin Middle School came to speak with cadets today, Monday, December 11th about life at MMS. She answered questions and shared a glimpse into the life of a middle school student preparing the cadets for their observations tomorrow. Cadets - you can answer the blog questions here or leave her a note about her visit!
1. What are the physical differences between a middle school aged child and a ten year old child?
2. What are the intellectual differences between a middle school aged child and a ten-year old child?
3. What have you observed about the social development of middle school children?

1. They are starting to hit puberty. They've grown taller and just overall developed...voices changing etc.
2. Intellectually, children are starting to think abstractly. They are taking courses such as algebra and geometry that require visualization and abstract thought.
3. There is a lot more social interaction with children. They try to be popular, look cool, and have lots of friends....maybe even boyfriends/girlfriends.

1.) The middle school aged kids are bigger, to the point where they look exactly like us only smaller, and less developed.
2.) I think the middle school aged kids are completely independant, to the point where they don't want to be told what to do. I think they're also learning more complex things, like algebra.
3.) I think the middle schoolers have become less mean in the earlier grades, but then I also feel that there is more drama in the females and the males are more imature like Ms. Kelly said they would be.

1) Middle school kids eat a lot more...lol. The sixth graders are just beginning their transitions into young adults. The children are not fully grown and are in that gangly transition stage.
2) The levels of expectation when it comes to content are a lot higher. The content is harder, and the classes are a lot different.
When you get into middle school, you finally have more than one teacher and you actually change clasrooms throughout the day.
3) They talk A LOT. They're so talkative with each other and only too willing to talk to the high school students that are observing.
There is a lot more pressure to fit into the social scene and friends are needed to be able to roam the halls with.

Wohoo!! Observations were fun...

1. Physical I believe they are just starting to go through the changes known as puberty, by getting taller and more "Developed".
2. Intellectually, they are starting to have harder content by more logical facts, and more independt learning by projects, and other things. And more stress with more teachers.
3. Social interaction is horribl in middle school. More people don't known each other and if you don't have a click of friends you are doomed from the beginning.
